Two poems for Mereana

Roarr

a fairy
with red food colouring in her hair
squashes the side of her foot
flat against my cheek.

are you a fairy?

I ask

no, I’m a tiger
she says
breathing her
candy pink stripes
against my ear
a little, little tiger.

You’re almost
as tall as me

I say

and she says
yes
but I’m already four.

Acrania

Do you know why
this doll has no head?

she asks me

and I ponder
the metaphoric significance
of her question
construct an answer
sufficiently cerebral

but she’s already
answered for me
because she wanted
to have it cut off.
